Fragments of a Hero

Beside my bed in a lumpy chair

You read to me, and I knew you were there

Throughout the night while I lay sleeping,

So sick and frail and weak.

You shielded me, brave loyal knight

Slew my dragons, ready to fight

The monsters, lurking

Around dark corners as I grew.

Banjos, Lincoln, Josie Wales

We shared them all, you never failed

To let me in to glimpse your world

So full of sun and sky.

My love of words, my joy in books

Classic movies, Barney’s “looks,”

We watched and laughed

And hoarded bits of each within.

You taught me how to ride a bike

To swim, to run, to walk upright,

Head held high,

Unashamed of where I’m from.

If you were here, I’d pull you close

And tell you how I miss you most

Of all I’ve lost  that’s good and right

In this fallen world.

How beautiful! No one quite like our hero is there?
